Experience RESORA

Resora is a 1,638-acre former plantation near Albany that was originally owned by one of the largest slaveholder estates in Georgia. When New Communities purchased this land in 2011 they set out to create a unique headquarters for the organization — both a retreat and conference center and a working farm. As Shirley Sherrod put it, Resora is envisioned as “a place where we could both farm the land and also nurture the minds of people.” 

The Village

The land where Resora has taken root is one of southwest Georgia’s original, large plantations. At 1,638 acres, these gently rolling fields, orderly orchards, and moss-draped cypress stands have been inhabited by slaves and farmers, hunters and fishermen, and most recently, Boy Scouts and executives visiting a luxury retreat.

The former plantation features an antebellum mansion, cabins, guest houses, and farm buildings alongside some of the most prized and productive farmland in the country. But the site is organized for a different time in history. It is a relic of the Old South in need of a fresh vision. 

The Farm ​

The central farmland, organized around the remnants of a once-expansive pecan orchard, remains a working landscape: an agricultural research lab for testing, site-learning, and production.

The Farm is the working core of the property: a place for hands- on instruction and experimentation. It includes sites for farm residences, operations, and maintenance facilities creating a high functioning, self- contained, and profitable production unit that also makes essential contributions to the experience and identity of the Resora. The site actively produces pecans, satsuma oranges, and Zucchini squash among other crops.
